Not all music, film and technology relates to everyone and not all media resonates effectively, so how does a creative person make their content seen and relatable? Panelists at the “How to Create Necessary, Authentic and Targeted Media” during SXSW on March 12th shared some strategies on how to make something unique so it can reach the right audience.

The key is to be authentic, according to Dr. Rachel Mersey with Northwestern University. If you want to put your content online and want others to respond to what you’ve created, there needs to be thought behind every step of the creation process, including:

  • What language would be best to use?
  • What color and image choices would be best to use?
  • What is the best product or name of my channel?

For a creative person seeking to express themselves through music, film, art, or technology, their next step after creating is sharing what you’ve created with the world via platforms like Soundcloud or YouTube.

Shayla Stern with Next Avenue offered tips to create media that is targeted towards the audience you want to reach:

  • Everything you create should return to the purpose of your content.
  • Create very specific content that shows a unique storytelling angle & engages the audience you seek to connect with.
  • Focus on why this content is needed & how it relates to your social identity.
  • Collect & analyze comments and adjust your content to better relate to audience.

Having a clear understanding of the audience you want to reach, and applying some of theses tips should help your song, movie, video game, book or article connect with the people who will enjoy and want to have it.
