Meet Latinitas’ El Paso Summer Program Leader, Samantha Rucobo. Born and raised in El Paso, Texas, Samantha is currently enrolled at El Paso Community College studying Public Relations with hopes to transfer to the University of Texas in Austin for the Fall 2019 term. When she is not at school or at Latinitas, Samantha enjoys spending time her two dogs and trying new interesting foods.
Why did you choose your major?
I had already been working in the Public Relations industry in Los Angeles for about 4 years, so it was only natural to continue my education with that major. I’ve also enjoyed working behind the scenes with brands and organizations I’m really passionate about.
What made you want to join Latinitas?
Immediately after researching Latinitas and reading the mission statement, it was only natural for me to figure out how to get involved within my community. I’m very passionate about educating young girls on the opportunities they can have in the media industry.
What extracurricular activities do you participate in?
Last semester, I was involved with the student-run newspaper, Tejano Tribune. However, this coming semester I plan on working with, Voto Latino, which is an organization that brings awareness to Latinos on how important our vote is. I also hope to work hand-in-hand with the Queer Straight Alliance (QSA) which educates and supports issues of diversity and sexual orientation.
Who is one of your role models and why?
It’s so hard to pick! There are so many people I admire. After taking an art class last semester, Frida Kahlo is definitely a role model of mine. She was a true visionary and expressed herself through her art regardless of what anyone said. I strongly believe she was the pioneer of the female art movement to what it has become today.
What is your idea of a dream job and how will your involvement with Latinitas get you there?
My dream job would be to own my Public Relations agency in the Austin area that supports local nonprofits or to work with a nonprofit specifically in their PR department. I originally wanted to join Latinitas media section, however; I decided to get out of my comfort zone and work in their mentor program instead. I strongly believe that the skills that I will gain from working with Latinitas’ participants will propel me forward in my confidence skills and I think that is the key to most successes.
What is one of your favorite hobbies and how’d you get started with it?
One my favorite hobbies is trying new foods whether that’s cooking at home or going out. This hobby of mine originally started when I moved to Los Angeles, they have such an abundance of restaurants and food types, it’s amazing! I think it’s great to educate your palate to try new things that you normally wouldn’t and to learn about different cultures.
What is one of your guilty pleasures?
My main guilty pleasure are my dogs. I literally adore them and I can never stay mad at them. Oh and hot cheetos, always.
What are the best and worst uses of the internet?
The best use of the internet is having the ability to educate yourself on virtually any subject, however; it’s downfalls are when you start believing and internalizing everything you read.
