Meet Latinitas’ Spring 2019 Development Intern, Lynzi Rojas. Lynzi is from Flower Mound, TX, just northwest of Dallas. She is a senior studying journalism with a certificate in Business Foundations at the University of Texas at Austin, graduating this May. We’re so excited to have Lynzi on our team and can’t wait to see what she accomplishes this semester with us!
Why did you choose your major?
Choosing my major was a long process for me. I started as a biology major, switched to liberal arts, before finally landing on journalism. I have always loved to write, but considering how strong of a program UT offers for journalism, it was almost a no brainer. I took an introductory class before making the decision and fell in love with what I was learning. News is a daily part of people’s lives and it is important to the function of a democracy. If you know news, then you can make the best decisions for yourself, particularly when it comes time to vote.
What made you want to join Latinitas?
I became aware of Latinitas when I was scouring LinkedIn for available internships, and I was really inspired by the mission and objectives of the organization. It resonated with me and I felt that this organization truly does make a difference, so I am super excited to be a part of the team this semester.
What extracurricular activities do you participate in?
I am a member of a sorority at UT (Alpha Phi) as well as a member of Texas for Expanding Opportunity (TEO), which is a mentoring organization. I am able to mentor a middle school girl at Martin Middle School every week, which is awesome and very rewarding.
Who is one of your role models and why?
One of my role models is Pat McGrath. I am here for self-starters, and she is one of the most ambitious women I follow. She is a woman of color, yet she has made such a name for herself in the beauty industry. She works on some of the top runways for fashion houses as well as on the most in-demand beauty campaigns today. She also started her cosmetic company, which has generated incredible success.
What is your idea of a dream job and how will your involvement with Latinitas get you there?
To be honest, I don’t really have an ideal dream job, but I find non-profit organizations are inspiring as they offer the chance to actually make a difference in their communities. By interning at Latinitas, not only do I get to have firsthand experience working at a non-profit, but I can learn more about what I might want to do after I graduate. Maybe that will be working at an organization similar to Latinitas, so my experience here will definitely help to shape my future.
What is one of your favorite hobbies and how’d you get started with it?
One of my favorite hobbies is horseback riding, even though that could be classified as a sport. I grew up riding horses and really invested a lot of my time in showing through middle and high school. Now, it is more of a hobby since I live in Austin now and only get the chance to ride when I am home for school breaks.
What is one of your guilty pleasures?
One of my biggest guilty pleasures is binge watching beauty videos on YouTube. I find them relaxing since they are so predictable with the same steps over and over again. Unfortunately, I am also a shopaholic when it comes to beauty or skincare products because of this pastime.
