Meet Latinitas’ Summer Social Media Intern Laura Valdez-Oranday. Born and raised in San Antonio, TX, Laura studies Theatre Performance and Advertising Management at the University of Texas at Austin. Laura’s set to graduate in May 2019 with her two degrees and a certification in Business Foundations and hopes to combine her majors to represent Latinx individuals in the entertainment industry.
Why did you choose your majors?
The arts were a way for me to creatively express myself growing up, and advertising had always been a fast-paced creative industry that I was attracted to. I want to support the arts and help create content that is creatively fulfilling as it is representative and beneficial.
What made you want to join Latinitas?
Growing up as a Latina youth, I quickly realized the lack of representation in entertainment, tech, and other media. That needs to change. Latinitas strives to empower Latina youth with a message I truly identify with and support wholeheartedly.
What extracurricular activities do you participate in?
As a theatre student, it’s hard not to partake in productions. I act here and there in UT Austin productions. My favorite production has been Luna by Ramon Esquivel, a bilingual show about friendship that toured around Austin ISD schools.
Who is one of your role models and why?
Natalie Portman, for sure. Maybe it’s because I was a total Star Wars geek growing up, but her dedication to her craft and determination to vocalize her fame to bring attention to social and political issues is something I value in her especially.
What is your idea of a dream job and how will your involvement with Latinitas get you there?
My dream job is one where I can flourish creatively while leaving an impact on communities through representation. Whether that be in an advertising agency producing ethical content for empowering companies, representing Latina voices in entertainment, or helping drive a nonprofit — I’m there! Latinitas hits all of those aspects, and I’m excited to be a part of it.
What is one of your favorite hobbies and how’d you get started with it?
Singing in the shower. It began when I realized I could bring a speaker in the bathroom with me. I put on full-length concerts to sold out arenas, no big deal.
What is one of your guilty pleasures?
I’m not gonna lie, I’m a sucker for true crime stories and Buzzfeed quizzes. “What kind of person am I based on my junk food choices?” Yes, please!
What are the best and worst uses of the internet?
The best way is to connect, learn new viewpoints, and express yourself with individuals through social media. The worst use is utilizing social media channels to push a hateful agenda.
