Janelle Martinez was born and raised in San Antonio, TX. She currently attends the University of Texas at Austin, pursuing a degree in Advertising with a minor in Business. As Latinitas’ new Admin Assistant Intern, Janelle hopes to positively impact her community, while learning the ins and outs of the nonprofit sector. Janelle is expected to graduate in December 2019.
Why did you choose your major?
I chose to major in Advertising because it’s a perfect mixture of art and business. It blends creative fields with more quantitative fields and has the power to shape the way people think.
What made you want to join Latinitas?
What attracted me to Latinitas was the mission of the organization. I feel really passionate about what opportunities are provided to these young girls to empower them through media and technology. I believe Latinitas is helping to build more minority women professionals. Everyone who works here contributes to the girls’ future success and I wanted to be a part of that.
What extracurricular activities do you participate in?
I enjoy playing sports, especially volleyball. I’m very open to learning new things so I will play any sport even if I’m not good. Being a part of a team is nice and it’s a way to have fun while getting some exercise.
Who is one of your role models and why?
My mom is one of my role models. She taught me to be independent, work hard to get what I want, and she is one of my biggest supporters. She is also the most giving and selfless person I know and that is something I cherish most about her.
What is your idea of a dream job and how will your involvement with Latinitas get you there?
My dream job is to work in Advertising and hopefully help make a difference in how minorities and women are represented in the media. Latinitas will give me the experience of being involved with an organization whose purpose is to help this community. I look forward to being a part of something bigger than myself.
What is one of your favorite hobbies and how’d you get started with it?
One of my favorite hobbies is drawing. I could spend hours drawing and not get bored. It’s relaxing to me. I only wish I had more free time to do it.
What is one of your guilty pleasures?
Hot fries are, and probably always will be, my guilty pleasure.
What are the best and worst uses of the internet?
The internet is our connection to the whole world. The best use of it is the ability to communicate efficiently through social media with family and friends no matter how far away they are. On the other hand, people can get brave behind a screen and say or do negative things.
