Meet Chantal Lesley, Latinitas’ Spring 2019 Graphic Design Intern. Chantal is half-German, half-Peruvian, but considers herself Mexican-by-association as she grew up in Brownsville, TX along the border of Mexico for most of her life. She is currently attending Texas State University, majoring in communications design and photography. She expects to graduate in Spring 2021. We can’t wait to see what Chantal accomplishes on our team!

Why did you choose your major?

Originally I pursued a degree in marketing because I liked that it was a creative aspect of business, but I honestly did not feel very fulfilled from it at all. I have always been very interested in art and technology, and I felt that design was the perfect blend of both. I know I made the right choice because everyday I’m excited to go to school, and I’m in love with everything I get to learn.

What made you want to join Latinitas?

I had been following Latinitas on social media for a few years and really resonated with its mission. In the past I have volunteered in STEM programs, so being able to have the opportunity to collaborate with another team that aligns with my morals is very exciting to me.

What extracurricular activities do you participate in?

I am the public relations officer of the Middle Grey Photography Club at Texas State and am also a member of the AIGA — American Institute of Graphic Arts at Texas State group.

Who is one of your role models and why?

My role model always and forever would have to be Selena Quintanilla. She was the first person I wanted to be when I was a little girl. Not only could I relate to her because she was a small town girl from the Rio Grande Valley like myself, but I also relate to the immense passion and drive that she had. One of my favorite quotes by her that I take to heart and constantly remind myself of is: “Be strong minded and always think that the impossible is possible.”

What is your idea of a dream job and how will your involvement with Latinitas get you there?

My dream job is to be a UX Designer. The fact that Latinitas works closely with the tech community excites me, and I look forward to learning more outside of a classroom.

What is one of your favorite hobbies and how’d you get started with it?

I participate in Aerials about 4 times a week. I started two years ago when I was looking for a new form of fitness. My favorite apparatus is the Lyra, but I also train in Silks, Hammock and Trapeze. The aerial community is one of the most welcoming and supportive communities I’ve ever been a part of. For now I just do it for fun and fitness, but I hope to be able to perform one day soon!

What is one of your guilty pleasures?

I would have to say binge watching Forensic Files. I watch that show almost every night before I fall asleep. Originally, out of high school, I wanted to be a forensic scientist, but I quickly found out that I was unfortunately not very good at chemistry. I feel like watching the show lets me live out the science-loving part of me.
