Meet Latinitas’ Spring 2018 Video and Editing Intern, Ashley Brown.She was born in Baltimore, Maryland, but grew up in San Antonio, Texas, under a Belizean cultured household with her mother and grandparents. She completed her first two years of coIlege in Shreveport, Louisiana, at Centenary College where she played Division 3 NCAA volleyball and majored in radio, television and film production. She currently attends Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, as a junior pursuing a B.S. degree in Mass Communications/Electronic Media with a double minor in Computer Science and Psychology and she expects to graduate in May 2019.
What made you want to join Latinitas?
Latinitas is unique and special because it focuses on a group of women that don’t get noticed by mainstream media and I think it is an amazing opportunity for these young women to know they can really change the world. I believe in the intertwining of cultures to make something beautiful.
Why did you choose your major?
I took the digital media career path in high school and absolutely fell in love with it. I have always been infatuated with this form of art and the way it can bring people together and tell stories.
What extracurricular activities do you participate in?
I am a reporter for the University Star Newspaper at Texas State University. I also am an assistant coach for a middle school girls’ national club volleyball team. I am a business owner of my own photography company in Texas named Brownie Photography where I focus on weddings, event photography, and photo shoot photography.
Who is one of your role models and why?
Oprah Winfrey is one of the most inspirational women in this world today in my opinion. She has been faced with so much adversity and broke down every wall to create something that no minority woman ever thought was possible for us. And honestly, how could anyone not like Oprah?
What is your idea of a dream job and how will your involvement with Latinitas get you there?
My dream job is to be the director and the producer of my own stories. I hope to one day inspire the world with the stories I create. I hope I can bring my creativity to Latinitas and push this organization farther than it has ever been. I never want anybody to ever doubt themselves in what they are capable of.
What is one of your favorite hobbies and how’d you get started with it?
To my surprise, I really enjoy golf. I was forced into a game of golf when I met my boyfriend’s family and ever since then, I voluntarily go to golf courses to play a round with some friends. It’s pretty relaxing.
What is one of your guilty pleasures?
My favorite TV show at the moment is Floribama Shore, which is one-hundred percent a trashy reality television show where young people make bad decisions, but I love it.
What are the best and worst uses of the internet?
The internet gives all people access to any piece of information their heart desires. This can be a good and a bad thing. Knowledge is power and everyone deserves the right of being educated. However, too much power in the hands of an evil person can be very dangerous.
