Alexandra Galvan is a senior studying global studies at St. Edward’s University, set to graduate this May (she is counting down the days until May 11!). She is originally from Pleasanton, Texas, a small town 35 miles south of San Antonio. She is Latinitas’ Spring 2019 Social Media Intern. We are excited to have Alexandra join our team and produce social media content for us.
Why did you choose your major?
Global studies has interested me ever since I was a child. How do countries interact? In what ways do they share commonalities? Differences? It was as I got older that these questions become more and more complex. What are the social issues that are globally present? How does proliferation present a current threat to the international arena? So on and so forth. I’m specifically interested in the human rights and humanitarian assistance sector.
What made you want to join Latinitas?
I have been wanting to intern with Latinitas for over a year after I met Briseida at a non-profit internship fair. The very mission of providing the young generation of Latina leaders to be all encompassing innovators through tech and media really jumped out at me. Being part of a nonprofit that seeks to provide this space for our upcoming Latina women gives me a life-changing opportunity to not only be a team member to a powerful movement, but a leader in my community.
What extracurricular activities do you participate in?
I’m the communications director for the Latino Student Leadership Organization at St. Edward’s. Additionally, I participate in the various service projects St. Edward’s campus ministry provides for students such as serving at Casa Marianella, Posada Esperanza, and Festival Beach Community Garden.
Who is one of your role models and why?
One of my role models is Nadia Aboulhosn. She’s an American-Lebanese plus size model, blogger, and designer who seeks to create spaces for dialogues that encompass body positivity, self-acceptance, and women in business. I look up to Nadia so much because she has been able to maintain true to herself while being this influential woman who started her own clothing line. She’s never skipped a beat in balancing her goofy and blunt character with the entrepreneurial/ business side of her career.
What is your idea of a dream job and how will your involvement with Latinitas get you there?
My ideal dream job would be one day holding the seat of the first female Secretary General of the United Nations. By interning at Latinitas, I’m part of a body of people who are seeking to alleviate a social issue within the Latino community (promoting more opportunities for young Latina women and girls in the STEM field), but an issue that nonetheless affects the world globally across all communities of women. And it is exactly what some of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals seek to address; gender equality, quality education, and decent work and economic growth.
What is one of your favorite hobbies and how’d you get started with it?
One of my hobbies is collecting poetry, proses, and attending poetry slams. Austin is full of different art/ artists and it so happens to host a ton of poetry slam contests. My favorite poets are Maya Angelou, Lang Leav, Yesika Salgado, and BrownBadassBonita.
What is one of your guilty pleasures?
This is going to sound terrible, but my ultimate guilty pleasure is listening to disco/funk/motown music on the daily. In the morning when I wake up, in the shower, at work, when I’m on the treadmill at the gym, more than likely I’ll be listening to the Bee Gees or the Kool & the Gang to get me through the day in a positive upbeat mood.
