At Latinitas, we have a number of volunteers that go above and beyond to help support our mission of empowering all girls to innovate through media and technology. This spring we’d like to give a big thank you to two of our Club Latinitas Volunteers, Roxanna Torres-Guerrero and Anakaren Elizondo. Roxanna and Anakaren have dedicated their time and skills at four of our after-school programs since the fall 2017 school semester. Check out what they’ve enjoyed the most from their Club Latinitas volunteer experience below:

Anakaren Elizondo and Roxanna Torres-Guerrero, two of Latinitas’ after-school club volunteers.

Q: What do you enjoy the most when volunteering at Club Latinitas?

Roxanna: I really enjoy making new friends with the Club Leaders, but most of all, I enjoy how spirited and engaged some of the girls are.

Anakaren: What I enjoy most when volunteering at Club Latinitas is that I get to see and meet some great chicas! I enjoy teaching them about STEM, talking to them, and being their friend.

Q: Tell us one thing you’ve learned from volunteering with Latinitas.

Roxanna: I learned with Latinitas that it is never too early to be a social justice warrior, and one is never too young to start fighting against social norms. Within the lessons about beauty standards, some girls were outraged of what the representation of women is shown in the media. At the age of 10 and 11, these girls were absolutely against conforming for social norms. It was amazing to see.

Anakaren: One thing I’ve learned from volunteering with Latinitas is knowing more about STEM careers, and that we women can do them too.

Q: What is your advice to girls interested in pursuing a career in media, tech, or other STEM careers?

Roxanna: My advice to girls pursuing a future with technology or STEM is to never let anyone disregard the potential you have, it is not only a field for men. Girls can revolutionize the technology world by giving perspective only women have.

Anakaren: My advice to girls is that STEM, media, or tech careers are great opportunities to understand the world, and make it a better place for my generation and the rest to come. I believe that women, Latinas, do have the right and are smart enough to learn about advertising, math, science, etc. and I do believe that if more women go into those fields, the world can change for the better.

About Roxanna Torres-Guerrero:

Roxanna Torres-Guerrero is 22 years old and is an Austin native. She is a first-generation Mexican-American graduate, with a Bachelors in Psychology and minor in Spanish. Roxanna is currently doing a year of service with Americorp, and the Literacy First program dedicated to teaching bilingual K-2nd-grade students to read in their native tongue, specifically Spanish.

About Anakaren Elizondo:

Anakaren Elizondo is from Monterrey, Mexico and is attending St. Edward’s University pursuing a degree in Psychology. Her goal is to help people be the best version of themselves.
