Busy Philipps has become one of America’s most relatable stars. She began her career in the late 1990s to 2000s with favorites such as Freaks and Geeks and Dawson’s Creek. Fast forward to today and she is now the only female late night talk show host in the United States. In this featured session, the Busy Tonight host talks about how she got to this point in her career through trusting her gut and with perseverance.

She was recently interviewed at Austin’s annual South by Southwest festival by Hillary Kerr, co-founder of many beauty-centered companies and her podcast Second Life. Kerr started the conversation by asking how one creates their own story and hustles to get to where they want to be.

Philipps explained that one must go slowly and with great purpose. She said she was always an active child who loved storytelling and knew her goal was to act. She was exposed to the industry at a young age and was grateful that her mother encouraged her passion by enrolling her in acting-related extra-curricular activities. It was then that Phillips had the opportunity to create her own content.

However, once she got her big break it didn’t take long for Philipps to realize there was an unglamorous side of Hollywood. She explained that she often felt that she was not good enough for the industry, and that constantly trying to fit into the industry was hard. It wasn’t until she became a mother that she truly began to take control of her own career and started to become more selective about the roles and opportunities she would take on. She admitted to being an early social media adapter and that when Instagram Stories was first introduced in 2013, she saw it as an opportunity to create little bits of content that were completely her own.

Based on her success with Instagram stories, Philipps went on to write a memoir “This Will Only Hurt a Little” which became an instant New York Times best seller. “I wanted to put all of the things truthfully and as honestly as I could. I felt like I was done holding things in just because I was a woman,” Phillips said. “I wanted to let go, so I did.”

The session neared its end with Kerr asking Philipps to talk about what it takes to create one’s own story and how to get in touch with one’s authentic self to accomplish one’s dreams. Phillips said clichés are true: “Your true authentic self presents itself with the passage of time.” Pushing herself and being adamant is what got her to where she is.
